Tom Tackles the Brighton Marathon for WLM Seymour Place
After running 22 miles through the snow and ice last week, Tom is well on track for the upcoming Brighton Marathon. Unlike any other race of his, Tom is battling this one as a vegan – something he says has ‘ transformed’ his game. Armed with a wall of tinned beans and a bit of help from the cake providing vegan market stalls in Greenwich Market, Tom is running faster than ever and we can’t wait cheer him over the finish line on Sunday 15th April.
Something else that has been helping Tom along this fitness journey is his unwavering determination to overtake anyone running or rowing next to him, at the gym or in London’s parks. Here at WLM Seymour Place we have a feeling that this attitude was what lead Tom to run and row an incredible 72 miles in just the one week he had off work earlier this month!
Tom is running to support our work at WLM with street homeless people. At Seymour Place we provide services to alleviate the immediate and enduring hardships of rough sleeping and empower these individuals to make sustainable changes to their lives. Last year we helped 249 people off the streets!
One person we helped last month was a 68 year old man who sold his house to fund his father's care. We helped him to open his frozen bank account, set up a pension, get a Freedom pass and sign up with the credit! He stayed in our Winter Night Shelter, where he was provided with a meal and a safe place to stay. He now has his own accommodation and has much greater financial safety. He is one of 44 people that have been in our shelter since September who have gone on to secure accommodation.
Each day about 80 people access the above services. Last year 1517 individuals used the day centre, of which 956 people were new. These transformative services could not run without the donations we receive – so please sponsor Tom!
