Big House works with men and women who have served in the British Military and are in housing need. Recent improvements have put us in a strong position to develop more a more effective service over the coming few months. We will be looking to get maximum resident involvement in shaping our service as it develops.
Currently there are 11 studio flats in Camberwell where people receive the support of a housing worker to have a move on plan. In addition, there is an employment and skills worker to keep people busy and engaged in their plan. We work closely with a large number of ex-services organisations including our local British Legion Pop In, SSAFA, Veterans Aid, STOLL, WASP, The Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest, New Belvedere House and The Poppy Factory to name a few. The site in Camberwell is set up for people to be busy and working on things that will make their move on successful.
Everyone is aware that living in London and making ends meet can be a real challenge and so all residents have access to our ‘Money Champions’ programme. Local authorities often do not prioritise our veterans but through the Veteran’s Nomination Scheme there is a route to access affordable homes in the social housing sector. This has been the main route of move on. For those than need a little more continuing support the service has 6x one bedroom flats in Clapham where the team will continue to work with people with a view to moving into their own place.
Throughout 2017, further structure will inform our work. Our aim is to be trauma-informed and to work in a psychologically informed way. Ensuring the service is financially sustainable in a tumultuous funding climate will prove a great challenge
