Seymour Place (formerly West London Day Centre)
36.5hrs per week
Placement for 1 year
An exciting opportunity has arisen for live-in interns to join our team at Seymour Place, supporting homeless people to move off the streets and back into accommodation.
The placements will start as follows:
Seymour Place is a service of the West London Mission (WLM), which has offered pioneering social work since 1887, serving some of the most marginalized members of society, including street homeless people. WLM have developed a range of innovative projects that support and empower vulnerable people in London.
Seymour Place provides a wide range of services to support people who are homeless or undergoing resettlement, and is a key resource in this area of London, assisting up to 100 homeless people per day. We are very well networked with other agencies, and every month we help between 20 and 30 homeless people to move off the streets and back into accommodation.
The services we offer are designed to alleviate the immediate hardships of rough sleeping. These include a canteen, showers, laundry, clothing store, an on-site NHS healthcare service, luggage storage and mail collection. Overall we hope that through engaging with Seymour Place our clients address their issues and move on in life, we also provide a range of specialist services including the on-site Homeless Health Team, mental health support, drugs and alcohol support and a daily advice and referral service assisting with issues including accommodation, jobs and benefits.
Our team, totalling four Residential Interns, obtain valuable skills through specific training and by supporting the Project workers as they run the centre.
As a Residential Intern, you will also gain valuable practical experience through our involvement in the Employment Support groups and participation in longer-term development activities (including music, art, and English language lessons) and interacting with our clients to contribute to building their confidence and encourage clients to move away from a street based lifestyle.
Residential Interns receive a subsistence allowance of £75 per week for living expenses and accommodation (located above the centre in a self-contained flat) is provided (inclusive of bills) for the duration of the placement which is designed to be for a period of 12 months.
We also provide training and induction to support the placement.
This is a very rewarding opportunity to get first-hand experience of supporting homeless people in a busy day centre. It is essential that you have an interest in working with homeless people and demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the challenges our clients face and are sensitive to these. Any relevant experience would be an advantage.
